A Family Resort Giveaway for San Juan Island!

This may be my best giveaway yet!

When a friend or family member says they want to get away and escape the everyday – but not take a flight necessarily, or head abroad – I recommend Roche Harbor Resort. The resort is a gem set amongst the San Juan Islands, about 30 minutes from Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island. Take a ferry (or a floatplane, if you must) and you’re far away from school, work or other worries.

Cascadia Kids is hosting a giveaway for a two-night stay at Roche Harbor Resort. You and your family will enjoy staying at one of the property’s 800 sq. ft. Historic Company Town Cottages – near the pool and playground.

Company Town Cottage

Company Town Cottages at Roche Harbor Resort

These cottages go for between $199-339 a night, and are worth every penny. You get a two-bedroom cottage all to yourself (and the kids), along with a fully equipped kitchen for cooking your farm-fresh purchases. A BBQ and picnic table offers outdoor dining as well.

Kitchen in a Company Town Cottage

While at Roche Harbor, you can enjoy the resort’s family activities, like a scavenger hunt (with an ice-cream prize), a historic walking tour, hiking or whale watching. I can certainly vouch for the Roche Harbor doughnuts served up at Lime Kiln Café as a total kid-pleaser.

Boats parked in Roche Harbor

As I wrote in my book, Northwest Kid Trips: Portland, Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver, I love the resort’s grand historic feel (the signature “Hotel De Haro” was constructed back in 1886 as part of a company town) and waterside setting. But there’s also plenty of modernity to be found – just visit the 19-acre sculpture park.

If you win the prize, you can reach Roche Harbor by taking a Washington State Ferry, the Clipper (passenger ferry to Friday Harbor; May-Sept only, includes whale-watching) or by Kenmore Air’s seaplane. Transportation is not included in this giveaway; the ferry is the cheapest option.

  5. Darcy Dawson says

Extra bonus entry. 🙂 🙂 I’ve subscribed to your newsletter.

  6. San Juan Island is gorgeous any time of year. The ferry ride to and from is always a hit with my kids. We love to peruse the small shops in Friday Harbor. My son is definitely ready for the San Juan Whale Museum. There’s always great coffee and treats at the Lime Kiln Cafe. If it’s not raining too hard we can try to wear the kids out with some walking in Lime Kiln Point State Park. If there’s any chance that we can spy some whales, it will be bonus! I’ll bring my Northwest Kid Trips for other ideas. With a 6 & 4 year old, it’s good to have the flexibility. Thanks for all of the great travel tips!

  7. I follow your RSS feed. Great info. I would love to explore the San Juans. I have never been there so we would start with a walking tour then let the kids pick a fun activity.

  8. Oh how fun!! My family would LOVE the scavenger hunt! We do geocaching, so we’d probably try to find some caches over there too. What a neat place!

  23. Last summer we took our kids to the San Juans and Victoria for a week. It was in planning that trip that I first discovered your blog and subsequently bought your book. We had a fantastic trip (and the book/blog have continued to come in handy, since we live in Portland and have family in Seattle.) When I saw this giveaway, I immediately thought of all of our fond memories from the San Juans last summer, and couldn’t resist entering. We would love to go back. Roche Harbor was adorable – we saw the cottages when playing at the pool and playground last summer. We would also take our kids crabbing, watch the airplanes take off and land at the adjacent field, and I’d love to try whale-watching with them, too!

  24. I’d love for my family to do the scavenger hunt, and explore San Juan Islands National Historic Park.

  25. Laura Hendrix says

My family seems to always be in need of a vacation! As former Vashonites, we are missing the island life. I love the slow mornings with coffee, knowing an adventure is right in front of us be it finding Springer the orca or treasures around town.

  26. I honestly would just love to go to see all the boats. My 2 1/2 year old lately has been in love with them, and to go on one would be a great gift!

  27. Sounds amazing!

We love going sea-kayaking on San Juan Island. Most guided kayak tours require age 12+, but there is a tour company located AT Roche Harbor that takes kids age 6+. Every bit as scenic and fun as departing from the West side of the island, but a bit more sheltered.

  59. Robin Forman says

Love sea kayaking direct from Roche Harbor (more sheltered than the W Side of the island).

  60. My family took my brother, sister and I to the San Juan’s several times when we were kids, but its been years since I’ve been back. Would love to take my daughter and enjoy a fun weekend getaway.

  69. Haven’t been to Roche Harbor in AGES.
For me, San Juan Island is all about the farms, the alpacas, Mona the camel (!), lavender, in other words – island life. A pace or two behind the city, and that’s why we go.
    I want to go.
Tweeted, too. And Facebooked. Already a subscriber, natch.

Thanks for the opportunity!

  296. Janneke van Dam says

If I won this trip, we would reconnect as a family, soak up the magic and history of the place, kayak around to feel closer to the water, marine life and nature in general. We would walk around feeling thankful for such a magical place away from the city.

  297. We would like to take the kids kayaking around the waterways, including stopping at the Penn Cove dock for some fresh oysters. Then take a ferry to Orcas for a hike and some trout fishing in Moran State Park. And then… some simple beachcombing for treasures and interesting slime.
